Shapes worth owning
| Glass | For |
|---|---|
| All-purpose wine glass (tulip-shaped bowl) | Red and white wine |
| Larger red wine glass | Full-bodied reds; room to swirl |
| Flute or tulip | Fizz |
| Small sherry or port glass | A Christmas sherry, port with the cheese board |
| Tumbler | Water, whisky, soft drinks |
How many?
The number of guests you usually host, plus a few spares for breakages. Buying an open-stock range lets you replace single glasses.
Care
- Dishwasher-safe glasses save time; fine crystal is usually hand-wash only.
- Dry with a linen tea towel to avoid lint.
- Store upright or hang them by the base; resting on the rim can chip it.
For storing the bottles, see wine storage in the kitchen. Drying them? See tea towels.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need different glasses for red and white wine?
Not really. A good all-purpose tulip-shaped glass works for both.
Can wine glasses go in the dishwasher?
Many can, on the top rack. Fine crystal and glasses with gold rims are usually hand-wash only.
How should wine glasses be stored?
Upright in a cupboard, or hanging by the base from a rack. Storing them on their rims can chip the edge.
How we choose
BeneRecipes compares tools using manufacturer specifications and retailer listings. We have not tested these products ourselves and don't publish star ratings. We explain which type suits which cook and why.
