A punch bowl lets guests help themselves, which frees the host for everything else. Hot punch and mulled drinks need a bowl that can take the heat.

Choosing a bowl

FeatureWhy
CapacityAbout 5–8 litres serves 20–30 small cups
Heat resistanceHot punch needs heat-resistant glass or ceramic; antique cut glass can crack
A matching ladle and cupsMakes serving easy
Stable baseA full bowl is heavy

Hot or cold punch

  • Hot (mulled) punch: keep it in a pan on a low heat or in a slow cooker, and ladle from there, or warm the bowl first with hot water.
  • Cold punch: add a block of ice, which melts more slowly than cubes.

You will need a good ladle with a pouring lip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put hot punch in a glass punch bowl?

Only if it is heat-resistant. Ordinary or antique glass can crack with hot liquid; warm it first or serve from a pan.

How much punch do I need per guest?

Allow about 2–3 small cups (around 150 ml each) per guest for an evening.

How do I keep punch cold without diluting it?

Use a single large block of ice, or freeze some of the juice into ice cubes.
