Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire cooling rack
  • Heatproof bowl
  • Saucepan (for double boiler or candying)
  • Slotted spoon
  • Toothpick
  • Airtight container (for storage)

Ingredients

  • 3 large navel oranges firm and juicy
  • 8 oz dark chocolate 70% cocoa or higher, chopped
  • 1 tsp coconut oil optional, for smoother melting
  • For Candied Version (Optional):
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or coconut sugar for healthier option
  • 1 cup water
  • Optional Toppings:
  • 2 tbsp flaky sea salt
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut toasted
  • ¼ cup crushed pistachios
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon sugar mixed

Instructions

  • Wash oranges thoroughly to remove any wax or residue.
  • Using a sharp knife, slice oranges into ¼-inch thick rounds. Remove any seeds with a toothpick.
  • For Oven-Dried Method (healthier option):
  • Preheat oven to 200°F (95°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Arrange orange slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake for 2½-3 hours, flipping slices halfway through, until they're dry but still slightly chewy.
  • Allow to cool completely before dipping in chocolate.
  • For Candied Method (sweeter option):
  • In a wide saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  • Add orange slices in a single layer and simmer gently for 45-60 minutes, turning occasionally, until rinds become translucent.
  • Remove slices with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack over parchment paper. Let air dry for at least 1 hour.
  • For the Chocolate Coating:
  • Place chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. If using coconut oil, add it now.
  • For double-boiler method: Set the bowl over a pot of simmering water (not touching the water). Stir until completely melted and smooth.
  • For microwave method: Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted.
  • Dipping the Orange Slices:
  • Hold each orange slice by the edge and dip halfway into the melted chocolate.
  • Allow excess chocolate to drip off, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • If using toppings, sprinkle them over the chocolate portion while still wet.
  • Allow chocolate to set completely at room temperature (about 1 hour) or refrigerate for 15 minutes to speed up the process.
  • Store in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers.

Notes

For best results, choose oranges that are firm and heavy for their size. Blood oranges can be used for a beautiful color variation. The oven-dried method creates a chewier texture and is lower in sugar, while the candied method produces a sweeter, more tender result. For a vegan version, ensure your chocolate is dairy-free. These treats can be stored at room temperature for 3-5 days or refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
