  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the vanilla.
  • Gradually blend in the flour and salt.
  • Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass or fork, and add decorations if desired.
  • Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden.
  • Let cool on wire racks.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage. Chill dough for 30 minutes before baking to prevent spreading.
